One last post...
This is it for this blog. I just read a very interesting article about a photography insructor in the New York Times. I thought you might want to read it too.

Final Projects - Untitled
I was very impressed with the depth and understanding of the power of photography that was displayed today during your Final Critique.
A very heartfelt Thank You for following me down this sometimes crooked and curvy path towards learning photography. I have been constantly amazed with the ideas and execution you come up with. I am inspired by your enthusiasm and willingness to work hard. I am encouraged by your desire to do things right the first time and not get in the practice of polishing those turds.
Remember to tell strong stories and to continue looking for that sweet light. It will make all the difference.
Here are some stories that particularly impressed me. I knew on the first day of class that I would cry at the final critique. You didn't disappoint.
Jenisse Decker, The Life of a Danbo
Christine Barlow - My Sweet Older Brother, Brian
Amanda Tillotson - Friends and Their Collections
Matt Haynie - Cocaine Guy
Amy Welling - Flaws
Rebecca Tolman - Passion For Horses
Nicole Lauret - Daddy's Little Girl
Tyler Collet - Field Of Dreams
My favorite photograph of the critique. Dripping with feeling and emotion. It doesn't get much more real than this.

Afghanistan - the stuff you'll never see
Here is one solder's view of Afghanistan.
These photographs are incredible. All with an iPhone. Never EVER EVER let yourself think it's all about the camera. It's not. It's all about the story and the personal access to tell that story.
Look at the variety he gets and the intimate view of the country that we have never seen in traditional coverage of that country.
I have no idea who this soldier is, but the work is amazing.

Joni Sternbach - Surfer Photographer
Joni uses a process called Wet Plate Collodion, which means she coats a glass plate with liquid emulsion that is light sensitive. She loads the plate into a light-tight holder, loads the holder into her 8x10 camera and makes her exposure. She has to work quickly b/c the emulsion needs to still be wet by the time she processes it in her little light-tight work cabinet. Check out the video, it is pretty sweet.

[Framed] - Jake Garn and Portraits
Remember during the portraiture assignment how I suggested that if your subject has something unique about them to showcase it and not pretend it doesn't exist? You don't remember that? Well then you were either asleep or absent (or both).
Well...this is a little late for the portraiture assignment, but it is such a strong story that I thought it was worth sharing.
Watch this. It is one way you can pay back your community that supports you.
I am shooting my first WWII Vet. on Friday. I might have a print by Saturday's final critique.

Final Critique - Schedule
Hey gang,
I want to start ON TIME next Saturday for the critique. I don't want to give you that first hour to work on your images, I want to jump right into the crit. So...that means that you will NEED to have your images done BEFORE we start at 8:30. I will be there by 8am JUST IN CASE there are some of you who can't get all of your work done either at home or on Tuesday.
In other words, if I call on you to go and show your images and you are not done...then guess what? Your assignment is late.
A bit harsh, but we will need that time to make sure we get through everyone and be finished by 1pm.
I am so mean. Too bad.

Exporting for Costco
Tyler was asking about taking files to Costco and having them printed. I was hoping that we'd be able to actually have an assignment where we did that, but I don't think with the shortened summer term.
I will lecture about exporting your files and prepping them to take to a place where you can get them printed. We will be concentrating on Costco b/c I think most of us would go there, but the idea will be the same regardless of where we take them to.
